While sitting in the emergency room, yet again, with Skye a few years ago, we were talking about his injuries leaving behind scars. As a preteen boy, of course he actually looked forward to having the scars! We talked about how each scar has a story behind it, and how he’d have plenty of fun stories and experiences to share with his own kiddos one day. And maybe they could even learn from a few of his mistakes.
This got me thinking about my own scars. Most of my scars are internal. We all have scars of our own. Most of us have scars left by past hurts, trauma, or even our own mistakes made. No matter what you’ve gone through, your scars tell a story. Nothing is for nothing. That may be improper grammar, but it makes sense to me. π Everything we go through serves a purpose… not even just for our own lives, but to serve in the lives of others as well. When I’m vulnerable enough to open up about things I’ve gone through, it always helps someone else, or at least begins a conversation that could potentially bring healing. There’s something freeing about wearing your scars, or battle wounds, proudly. Even if the scars remain, just like the deep gash in the back of my son’s head, they show how strong you are, and can remind you that if you’ve gotten through those painful times, you can keep on truckin’ through whatever else life throws your way!
I also can’t talk about scars without thinking of the nail scarred hands (or wrists) of Jesus. He has more healing powers than Wolverine, but even after being nailed to a cross, being buried, and resurrected, He still kept His very symbolic scars. These scars remain even in heaven to show us all just how much He loves us. Scars serve a purpose. Lean into yours today, and see how it can help someone else.
